Folkcraft "Amakusa clay idol" of Amakusa painting experience
It is about 450 years ago that Western civilization reached Amakusa with Christianity. During long history, there was for Christian including "prohibited religion law" and Christian oppression by the Edo Shogunate in the very hard times. Christians continued following faith secretly until "prohibited religion law" was solved in that in (1873) in 1873.
At that time, one of the things which Christians worshiped as change of statue of Maria is said to be when it is "mountain witch" (mountain witch) of "Amakusa clay idol".
It is said that we have begun to make "Amakusa clay idol" with native district folk crafts handed down to Amakusa district in (1716) in 1716. There are about 100 kinds of models, but, in Amakusa tour, can experience painting of this "mountain witch" (mountain witch).
As member of Amakusa clay idol preservation society tells even the first person directly, it is contents to be valuable, and to be able to enjoy in peace.

Amakusa cultural exchange building was built for the purpose of planning upbringing of educator in 1935 and was admitted as building that the unique western-style architecture was valuable and was registered with registration tangible cultural property of country.
